Yea, this guy pretty much nailed what's wrong with the channel. Might i add that it seems like the format has changed in recent years; I used to have it at my parent's house a few years ago and it seemed like they played more full concerts and things of that nature instead of this "shuffle" b.s.

And i agree the streaming quality is terrible; I've heard it a few times in a friends brand new car with with what seemed like a reasonably good sound system and I though it sounded like shit.

One thing I might disagree with is I do dig the 24/7 thing; prefect for those who can only listen late at night or for long road trips...

Id say pretty much the same thing..When I first heard the channel a few years ago I was pretty impressed. A friend of mine had it and we listend quite a bit three summers ago while having few enjoying the nice weather...My point - I just got a vehicle two months ago that came with satellite radio three month trial. I have put on GD channel so many times and thought the sound quality was total shit and they rarely if at all play more than one tune from a show. Ive been pretty damn dissappointed and it doesnt come with the basic subscription either. Its considered a "premium station". I was most definately expecting it to be better.

Just a few inprovements would make all the difference, starting with the sound quality. Most of the new vehicles that come with siriusxm have pretty good systems and you can hear very clearly just how bad the streaming quality is. Also, just play whole shows - whats so hard about that? I mean, its obvious the people who would be listening to the channel are heads and they would want that. Who knows...Another example of corporate bs not understanding their customers.

This week's schedule...

http://tinyurl.com/3j64ja2

looks like three concerts per day...every day

OK, so sound quality could be improved. But, when you grow up with a monaural "school-house" style record player and a "Sunoco Pump" design transistor radio you may have a skewed reference point.

Yes, and they're the same 3 or 4 shows, all week. Like the blog said I just don't get, with the unimaginable resources they have, why stuff should ever repeat once every 4 months let alone 5 times a week! Apparently they are either lazy or corporately homogenized, or both...

Ok, i can't count so you got me there, my point is there could just be so much more variety. No one should ever have to hear the studio Feel Like a Stranger twice in one day, LOL!

i agree, I also have never heard a 60s show on there. I wonder if it is because they are so short that they don't fill up the designated time slot...?

perhaps Sirius is limited to Commercial releases by GDP/Rhino? Not many 60's live releases out there.

A wild guess cause I don't get Sirius, so hellifiknow about Rhino

Sorry I'm late, but I only found this thread by searching Google for "sound quality" "Grateful Dead" "Sirius" "message board" -- no fault with Google, that's for sure!

I listen to the GD Channel quite a lot, and I've grown disenchanted with it over the years. They had more original programming in the first year, 2007-2008. One day, I think on the first day of winter 2008, they played nothing but various versions of "Dark Star" -- all day. On Memorial Day Weekend 2008 they played a series of outdoor concerts including MIT 5/70, just great stuff. The following year they ditched all this "special event" programming and just went with the day-to-day stuff, so the format never changes. I don't know why they aren't more creative with the programming -- it really isn't much different from what I could do with Media Monkey "shuffle" if all my Dead shows and studio LP box sets were stored on my computer, and my stuff sounds a hell of a lot better.

My biggest complaint is that the sound quality of the satellite broadcast is dreadful. Why does everything sound like it's coming from underwater? Their concerts all sound like they were recorded Live in Atlantis. It's almost like they ruin the sound deliberately so people won't tape the shows off the radio. I don't know much about the Internet streaming because my radio receives everything from outer space, not via my Internet provider.

Anyway, I'm glad to see others have similar responses & now I know that replacing my radio isn't going to solve the problem. If anyone else notices that the broadcasts sound not merely compressed but garbled (maybe that's the result of overcompression?), let me know here.

Tonight they're playing September 1973 Philadelphia Spectrum on the GD Channel! Although it sounds pretty bad, it does sound a little better if you don't listen through headphones. :)

I have Sirius, and for the most part i'm cool with the Dead channel. I've always been into studio Dead, so that helps.
But the low quality stream speed is starting to annoy me. Do you think I (we) should call in on the Sunday show and find out if anything can be done ? I read the more popular stations have a higher speed. I'm not an audiophile by any means, but you can hear it in the cymbals. Also, there seems to be some very quiet static now and then, what the hell ?
Mine's factory installed by the way....Any thoughts ?

that's the most accurate review i've ever seen of the GD channel. couldn't have said it better. some additional complaints:

- 96kpbs!? you fuckin' kidding me? most deadheads have a good ear for recording/playback quality, and this is just so unacceptable.

- stop playing so many studio versions! it's ridiculous how many studio versions they play, and they repeat them too. i once heard the studio version of sugar magnolia twice in one week.

other than that, he covered a lot of good points and many some very good and reasonable suggestions. wtf is wrong with the people in charge of that channel?

Over-compression of the digital audio has turned me off to the channel. I don't know the specifics, but it is pretty-much un-listenable to me most of the time...
but I try...

The 'talk shows' are enjoyable. I agree with what's said here, but if the sound doesn't improve, then I will never be a (paying) regular.

How do you figure? I rarely respond to anything you post.

Don't flatter yourself. Your posts are fairly boring, virtually always about the same topic, and rarely worth a response...

What you probably should do is get a grip on reality!

I have replied to your posts perhaps three times during the very brief time you have been participating here.

Why take yourself so seriously? You seem to know very little. Virtually every one of your goofy posts is the same. How about another on post-Brent Morning Dews?
